[quote:674fee9bde="SwingStylez"][quote:674fee9bde="Dawn"]Me too, it's kinda disturbing on how way off the mark this description was.
Just noticed I've graduated from "dance monkey" to "flat foot floogie" - um thanks but isn't that an ugly prostitute (with VD)? [/quote:674fee9bde]eeek! I hope you are wrong - what are your verified sources for that one??[/quote:674fee9bde]Mr Ben H told me that's what the song was about so you'd have to ask him

Are Loti Lenya and Lucy Brown in the same mold. They seem to be mentioned in a lot of songs back in the day.

Not sure, possibly though. I know a lot of songs back then had sex and drugs refs under slang words, much as music always has. I love it when you REALLY hear the lyrics of a song for the first time and then realise they're singing something far from innocent. I remember being in high school in Utah and explaining to a cheerleader that the song Lola by the Kinks was actually about a guy romancing (or being romanced) by a transvestite - she was slightly shocked.

In Uni we wanted to put on the back of our club t-shirts: "are you hep to the jive?". We were then informed that this was slang for "would you like some weed?" and decided NOT to put that on our shirts. I giggle a little every time i listen to that song.
Incidently, while not technically a swing musician so not entirely on topic, Louis Armstrong used to refuse to go onstage without smoking up first. That little fact was actually revealed on a major US news show in an interview with Armstrong.

How true this is, I don't know though. Been listening to Fine and Mellow in my car lately - bliss

Hehe, if she was from Utah, I'm surprised she even knew what a transvestite was :)

Yep, don't think she did  one of my other favourite memories of being in Utah is being on the bus coming back from school, totally silent as kids were being dropped off, radio on playing Lou Reed's Walk on The Wild Side so clearly you could hear every single line - don't think many kids got that either :D
