Hello Hello~!
Its almost Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown time! Please read through this entire email as there are some extremely important updates regarding the housing waiting list, hotel blocks, and choreography deadlines. Trust us, you DO NOT want to miss Showdown’s first year in New Orleans. Its guaranteed to be one of the most unique events you've ever attended. You don’t have to compete (unless you want to), you don’t have to take classes (unless you want to), and there will be LOTS of social dancing to be done (and we know all of you want to do that!). Secure your spot at a - still reasonable price - by purchasing a ticket TODAY! The next price increase is on Sept 7th. http://www.lindyshowdown.net/register.php Some VERY IMPORTANT updates: 1) If you are doing the choreography showcase, it is now mandatory that you send us a video of your routine along with an audio recording. You have until September 10th to sign up for showcase and send us recordings and videos. After this time we will no longer accept entries into the showcase. This is extremely important, as the band needs sufficient time to learn new songs. 2) All members of your showcase team must purchase a weekend pass. 3) Anyone requesting housing from now on will be put on a waiting list. If you have the means, please reserve a hotel room. 4) The $119 Holiday Inn room rate is only good until Sept 8th!!!!! 5) There is no video pass required this year. Please be respectful when filming. 6) The Sunday night venue (House of Blues) strictly prohibits video recording (Its their rule, not a ULHS rule. Sorry!) 7) The House of Blues is 18+. If you are under 18 and attending ULHS please email us for alternative ticket packages. lindyshowdown@gmail.com 8) If you haven’t heard, Norma Miller, Chazz Young & Judy Pritchett are all coming to New Orleans to celebrate with us. 9) And lastly, at the after hours parties, or anytime you are dancing in a bar where there is no cover charge, you must buy at least one drink (it can be water or juice) and please please please, don't forget to TIP THE BAND. They appreciate it! Check out some of the highlights from the 2009 schedule Thursday Oct 8th - Cruise on the Creole Queen Riverboat with Loose Marbles. Friday Oct 9th - Welcome Dance and Street Swing Dance Contest (free to enter, any style goes, you just have to do it on concrete) featuring New Orleans street musicians. - Opening Ceremony and TERPSICHORE: A Jazz Dancers Parade! - Evening swing dance with Dancin’ Fools: A Jazz & Swing Dance Choreography Showcase. Dance the night away with some of the best New Orleans jazz musicians featuring vocalist Meschiya Lake. - After Hours at Fritzels with Loose Marbles Saturday Oct 10th - Second Line: A New Orleans Style Jazz Dance demonstration & class at the New Orleans Jazz Historic National Park. - Outdoor Concert & Dance at the French Market. The ULHS weekend ticket price goes up on Monday August 3rd!
We still have more surprises in store including; more venues, more bands, more classes & lectures, a list of parade performers, and some very very special guests. We can say with confidence that you WILL regret it if you aren't present for this very special event. Won't you please come dance with us in the birthplace of jazz? Sign up today for only $115 for Friday-Sunday (or $145 for Thurs-Sunday - includes Riverboat Cruise) www.lindyshowdown.net Local housing available! ------------------------------------------------------- We are proud to announce our newest community partner: The New Orleans Jazz Historic National Park In 1987, the 100th U.S. Congress resolved that "Jazz is hereby designated as a rare and valuable national American treasure to which we should devote our attention, support, and resources to make sure it is preserved, understood and promulgated." The park's mission is to serve the nation as a global leader in the promulgation of jazz by enhancing and instilling a public appreciation and understanding of the origins, early history, development and progression of this uniquely American music art form - jazz. To preserve unimpaired this cultural resource and it’s core values for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The purpose of New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park is to * Preserve resources and information that are associated with the origins and early development of jazz in New Orleans * Enhance opportunities for visitors to experience and appreciate the sights and sounds of early jazz and the places where early jazz evolved * Interpret the origins, history, and progression of jazz * Promote and assist the education of students in various forms of jazz in order to perpetuate its continued evolution as a true American art form The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park is significant because: * New Orleans is widely recognized as the birthplace of jazz and the sites and structures associated with the early history of jazz remain in the city. * Jazz is America’s most widely recognized indigenous music art form; performance and appreciation of jazz is worldwide. * Many distinctive social and traditional practices associated with the origins of jazz continue in New Orleans today. http://www.nps.gov/jazz/

Some of the most common questions we get about The Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown are, “What if I don’t want to compete?” or “Is there anything for a beginning dancer or someone that just wants to dance?”
The answers is a big YES! And there is even more to do this year than any other year. Read on to see what’s in store for non-competitors and those interested in the social and educational aspects of jazz and swing dances. ~ Historical Presentations and Panel Discussions ~ One of the goals of ULHS is to promote the academic aspects of jazz music & dance culture. We are bringing together jazz historians, archivists, radio personalities, and older generations of New Orleans musicians and dancers, to discuss the evolution of the music and its relationship with the many jazz and swing dances that have been created. ~ Dance Classes for ALL LEVELS ~ Ever heard of a second line? Well its not just the group of people dancing behind the main line of musicians in a jazz funeral parade. Its also done in the streets of New Orleans whenever any jazz band walks by and in clubs like the Candlelight Lounge in the historic Treme neighborhood. One of the coolest things about the second line is that this jazz dance’s interest is not restricted to a select group of enthusiasts but celebrated by an entire city from young children to teens to middle aged folks. We are proud to present a class on a pure New Orleans solo jazz dance, The Second Line. Other classes throughout the weekend include; Rhythmic Footwork, Moves in Honor of Frankie Manning - The Ambassador of Lindy Hop, Collegiate Foxtrot, and First Stops - a mini routine known by lindy hoppers at the Savoy Ballroom. Lessons taught by Lennart Westerlund, Peter Loggins, Mia Goldsmith, and 3rd generation Savoy Ballroom lindy hopper, Sugar Sullivan. ~ Non-Dancing Social Meet-ups ~ In an effort to encourage connecting with people off the dance floor as well as on, we have organized non dancing social meet-ups throughout the weekend. These get-togethers are for anyone, but they are especially created for those new to The Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown or new to the city of New Orleans. Meet people and get a locals take on what to do and see when you’re not dancing. Wait, when will you not be dancing? ~ Social Dancing to Live Music ~ We’ve hired more bands than ever to play specifically for your social dancing pleasure. And at every dance there will be social dancing before, after and in between all dance contests and performances. Plus, New Orleans is known for is many street musicians. You are likely to run into a new band around every corner with swing dancers already busting a move in the street. See…..something for everyone! Buy your tickets this week to get the lowest ticket price. We STRONGLY encourage early ticket purchasing. We want you to save money and feel no financial stress about coming to this event! The 1st ticket price increase is on August 3rd (that’s coming up soon!) Current ticket prices (weekend tickets do not include workshops. Please purchase workshops separate) Friday-Sunday Weekend Ticket - $115 Thursday-Sunday Weekend Ticket - $145 (includes Thursday riverboat cruise) Workshop Ticket (7 classes/lectures) $40 For more info and to purchase a ticket today visit - http://www.lindyshowdown.net

I don't know about any of you, but I’ve been obsessive compulsively keeping track of videos posted from the Frankie Manning 95th Birthday Festival. Mostly because I didn’t get to see a lot of it despite being at all the evening events from before start until after finish.
Eventually, I decided that it would be useful for me to figure out which videos had the best angles and it snowballed into this mini-project creating these annotated, easy to reference blog posts by day/night. So now you can re-live the event or feel like you've gone even if you didn't. I should add that the official Frankie 95 DVD is being produced as we speak. You can order a copy by going to the Frankie95 website. Until then, click on the links below and enjoy! Thursday Friday day Friday night Saturday Sunday Monday Jerry www.ILHC.com
